Tameside Expats - try our map!

ARE you a former resident of Tameside who has moved abroad and who wants to get back in touch with people still living in the town? Do you know of friends or family who have moved overseas and you want to try and track them down? Well here's your chance with our new interactive map ...

In this section, we're giving an opportunity for people who were parted when locals decided to make new lives overseas to make contact once again.

If you are an ex-pat, who wants to know the whereabouts of a pal or relative, send us the details and we'll post them up here. The same is true of locals - let us know if you want to get back in touch with a local who has left these shores. You never know - they might just visit this site, read your message and you could be reunited.

Alternatively, ex-pats can write to us simply if they want to let the folks back home know what they've been up to, how life overseas is treating them, and what they miss about Tameside.

All you have to do to take advantage of this service is to click here to go to our interactive map of the world , then click on the part of the map where you live. Your own pinpoint will appear which you can move to the exact location you want (use the controls on the top-right of the map to move around and to zoom in and out, right down to street level).

A form will also appear which will allow you to give your name, contact details, reason for moving and anything else you want to share with us.

Hi there this is a long shot but here goes. I now live in Portugal but my father was from Dukinfield His name was Ernest Saxon i think his dads name was also Ernest and his Mother was Sarah. I remember meeting an Auntie Alice when I was very young and also remember my nana and pom pom as we called them but i was very young at the time . I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything as i know very little of his family . So please if you do know any little thing would be great to hear from you . Hi there

My name is Judy Barron (nee Taylor), I was born in Stalybridge in 1962 and emigrated with my family to Swaziland (Africa) in 1967. We returned twice during 67 and 81 and then returned to Johannesburg in 1981. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me from "Coply Comprehensive School", the old one in Stalybridge. I believe that one has now closed down. I spent my teenage years on Springs Hill and Ridge Hill Estate. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

G'day all, i am writing from Australia, I am Looking for the children of Joe Horton/Haughton, sorry not sure of spelling. who was an employee of Salford Electrics & lived in Salford. Hello to all Ashton Mashers, I am trying to contact a good friend from my past. She was a Canadian girl staying in Ashton, first on Hadfield Crescent and then on Tauton Road. This was round about 1975-1976, her name was Stephanie (Candy) Soilnick. I dont know if the spelling of her second name is right but the pronunciation is correct. I'm trying to contact Karl Goddard. He is in the Royal Engineers and some time around June last year started working at the embassy in Washington. Before he went to Washington he was living in Dukinfield and his family lived in Dukinfield and Stalybridge. In January this year I saw him listed in the New Years Honours List and read that he had been awarded an MBE. I would love to be able to pass on my congratulations to Karl. I only knew him for a short while before he went to Washington but in that short time I feel I knew him enough to say that I'm sure he truely deserves this honour. Unfortunately I no longer have contact details for Karl so if any of his friends or family see this notice I would be grateful if you would pass on my congratulations and my email address to Karl. I have received an article from "The Advertiser" dated January 24th, 2008 which was titled "Memories of Norah as a fairy" and submitted by one Elsie Saxon. Two of the persons mentioned in the article are/were members of my family. Marion Cooper was my mother and Fred my uncle and they lived on Chapel Street Dukinfield during their formative years.

If it is at all possible, I would like to contact Elsie Saxon to exchange information.

Searching for relatives: I am looking for relatives of my father Hubert Vernon son of William and Margaret (nee Trickett) Vernon. The connection also is in India. The other key names are: Allen E Vernon (ggf) b 1847; Mary E. Vernon (ggm) b 1848; plus the brothers and sisters of William and Mary. Also Cottrell/Booth/Margrave/Kirkham/Bennett. All of the above are relatives, but I really do not know where to begin as all I have are names without any other information. All of my fathers family I believe came from the Stalybridge area. OK... Here Goes ! I was born in Gee Cross, Hyde in 1942. I accompanied my parents to Germany for a couple of years in 1947, on return living in Dowson Road and later Gower Road. My last school was Flowery Field Secondary School which I left in February 1958 to join the Royal Air Force as a Boy Entrant. Those who knew or might remember me will most likely identify me when I mention I was the guy who was totally absorbed by all things aviation ! I was a member of 1196 (BRM) Squadron Air Training Corps of which my father at the time was the squadron adjutant (later becoming the Commanding Officer). I had a close group of friends who attended the ATC squadron and we had some good times. I’d really like to get in touch with anybody who might remember me; from school, the ATC or anybody else for that matter. I have spent the greater part of my adult life in foreign lands and am now slipping into retirement here in the Philippines. I would love to make contact with anybody who knew me, or even thinks the might have known me. It is, after all, very close on 50 years now since I left school !

I am trying to locate relations of my father's. My father is DAVID GRIFFITHS who was born in 1947 in Ashton - the son of CLIFFORD HANDEL GRIFFITHS and JOAN HALLAS.

Joan was the only child of ALBERT HALLAS and ANNIE LARGE who married in 1919. Albert had two sisters and one brother:

SARAH HALLAS born 1890 who married ARTHUR NASH in 1917 and had a daughter EDNA in 1919 and a daughter JESSIE in 1922. Jessie married FRANK GODDARD in 1945 and they had a daughter JUDITH in 1962.

HARRIET HALLAS born 1892 who married LEVI WEBB in 1919. I do not know what happened to them - they do not seem to have had any children.

JOHN HALLAS born 1898. He married ALICE EARLAM and their only surviving child was DOREEN born 1922 - she married JOHN RATCLIFFE and had a son BRIAN in 1940. John died in 1984 and Alice died in 1980.

Sarah, Harriet, Albert and John were all the children of ADAM HALLAS and ELIZABETH FOX. Adam died in 1907 but I have no idea what happened to Elizabeth. They lived mainly in Stalybridge.

I am interested in anyone who is related to these families or who knew any of them.

I am also trying to locate a CHRISTINE LARGE who was born in 1947 - the daughter of HAROLD LARGE and ALICE BRAYSHAW. Harold and Alice split up around 1959 and Alice may have remarried and Christine may be known by another surname - and has probably married by now. Harold died in 1969 and was the brother of Annie Hallas nee Large - my great grandmother who died in 1972. They also had a sister DOROTHY who married JOHN aka JACK QUIGGIN. She had no children. They were the children of JAMES LARGE and EUNICE MCDONALD. They seemed to live mainly on Britannia Street in Ashton.
