The other local master
by Rachel Broady10/ 3/2005
LAMORNA Birch preferred rural landscapes to Lowry's industrial
scenes.
He grew up in Manchester before choosing to settle in Cornwall, and
went on to help change the face of British art.
His career path is an interesting counterpoint to that of the
slightly younger LS Lowry, who chose to stay in the North West
shunning the fashionable art circles in which Birch mingled.
Now the exhibition entitled Shades of British Impressionism:
Lamorna Birch and His Circle throws light on the choices available
to both artists at that time revealing how the art world
worked.
Despite perhaps not being as well known as Lowry, Birch was perhaps
the most prolific leading painter of the 20th century, producing
more than 20,000 pictures of all kinds during his working life of
almost 70 years.
His very last painting, completed in 1954, is exhibited from a
private collection showing the stream in his beloved Lamorna
Valley.
The exhibition is at the Lowry until July 3
