REVIEW: Move over Moriarty
by George Dodds31/ 3/2005
FANS of Lipservice know the drill by now - Maggie Fox and Sue
Ryding produce a string of wisecracks and quick changes as they
produce an irreverent skit on a classic piece of British
literature.
On the receiving end this time is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's deadly
and pompous crime fighting duo - suitable candidates for the
treatment that's for sure.
There's no shortage of laughs as the couple fairly rattle through
The Garibaldi Biscuit Affair, inspired by the naked sighting in The
Strand of Flying Fernando - all applied with the subtlety of a
sledgehammer.
Some of it is genuinely laugh out loud funny - two chase scenes
played out on top of the evolving, and revolving, set were
genuinely inventive - but generally it had the air of the visual
pun and verbal dexterity sketches so beloved of Morecambe and Wise
and The Two Ronnies.
What was missing was the killer lines to keep the action moving
over the full 90 minutes and the weak ending was a real
let-down.
The fast changes produced the best line of the night as Ryding
returned to the Baker street sitting room minus the bushy grey
moustache, which had been a major part of the action all night. "I
see you've shaved," quipped Fox/Holmes. "Yes, I'm the sort of man
who needs to shave 12 times a day, it soon grows back," replied
Ryding/Watson, ducking behind the door to retrieve the missing
top-lip warmer.
