Exhumation of 300 bodies

by Michael Byrne
19/ 3/2008

DEVELOPERS may have to move up to 300 graves to build a new community centre in the grounds of an Ashton church.

Councillors approved plans for the 4C Community Centre at Christ Church, off Taunton Road, despite fears about exhumation of bodies.

Thank you for printing my comments in your paper last week. I am now asking the people of Ashton to stand up and be counted. Please do not stand in the market place and shake your head in disgust at the exhumation of 300 graves. Think how you would feel if it were your family members and put pen to paper. I don't ask you to write a letter just comment in the Advertiser that you agree with me. Rememb er in the Bible the story of David and Goliath. We are the Davids and the Deveopers and Church are Goliath but remember David won. So if people stand together we can win this fight for our families to rest in peace. Thank you in anticipation.    Blaze .........

I have read your comments and am sorry to tell you that with this Council, Money and greed is indeen more important than any respect for the dead !!!!

One interesting point on this matter is ......Am I correct in thinking that if someone is buried they have to pay the Council for that particular plot of land that they are buried in ????? I THINK THEY DO !!!! (never heard of free buriels have you ????), well thinking along those lines ....... if the Council do go ahead with this scheme then they should refund the costs incurred by the incumbents of these graves to their relatives !!!!! THERE MUST BE A POINT OF LAW IN THIS !!!! I REALLY THINK SOMEONE WITH THE CORRECT KNOWLEGE SHOULD LOOK DEEPLY INTO THIS !!! COME ON TAMESIDE COUNCIL, IF YOU GO AHEAD WITH THIS PLAN GIVE THE MONEY BACK !!!!!

how many of those morons at TMBC have relatives buried there, you dont get buried 1 minute and dug up & moved elsewhere no matter how many years later it is!we dont die & get buried for fun you so that local councils like Tameside can dig peoples remains up just to builds a community or even a sports centre like that one at oxford park?whats about all that spare land near the running track on richmond st where years ago used to have several football pitches where kids and some of the local pubs football teams etc used to play there on sundays?a community or sport centre or both would be ideal everyone living in and around crowhill,on weekday nights & also at weekends and during school holidays for local schools including waterloo & both canon burrows & johnsons & would keep kids off the streets theirs 1 other option where theirs any unused, club, pubs etc or any still up & running but losin money turn them into sport and or community centres or both?do them up & turn them into 1 centre or another that covers crowhill, oldham rd. taunton rd?whats wrong with all that spare land thats next to curzon ashton fc their old ground was bull dozed to make way for the then proposed metrolink that didnt happen cos new homes were built there instead after the then transport minister alistair darling whose now got gordons browns old job did a u turn?Q,how would TMBC like it if any of their relatives graves were dug up buried in christ church churchyard should be left why not prosecute all the dog owners whom over the many yrs & decades have use that yard 4 the dogs to foul then whats that CCTV in the yard 4 TMBC? answer me that. k.perry ashton moss,

I was born and bred in Ashton but I now live in Scotland but am a frequent visitor to A-U-L. I was horrified to read in the Advertiser of the exhumation of 300 graves. My grandparents are buried there and I feel disgust both with the Church and also the Council for allowing this to happen. We critisise young people for having no respect but what example is this setting when religious leaders and leaders of the community show scant regard for those buried and the families involved. Surely someone somewhere in A-U-L will realise the mistake being made and rectify it or is money and greed more important than respect for the dead.

Is nothing sacred any more ????

You can bet your bottom dollar that if any of Roy Oldhams family were buried there this would not be happening !!!!!
