This road is more than a bypass for the village of Mottram, it is the first stage of what can be considrered an extension to the M67, and the first part of a multi-lane trans-pennine highway which will carve it's way through the Peak District untill it reaches Sheffield. The time has come for the Government and it's citizens to decide if the future of transport in this country is to be based around private vehicles and increased road capacity. The decision on major projects like this will clearly show what kind of policies we can expect in years to come.

It's telling that the two other comments on this page are from people from outside the area.

Longdendale is made up of three villages village - it cannot sustain this level of traffic.

The people need this bypass NOW

we cant build our way out of congestion. If the bypass goes ahead then its just giving oppotunity for more houses to be built, which in 5 years time will have the same problems as we do now...congestion! There are other ways to help prevent traffic but as usual we choose the easiest quickest short-term fix. We cant keep destroying the trees they are the home to many wildlife and they are our lungs. why must we replace them with pollution?

Yet another example of Govt hypocrisy. Tony Bliar talks of the need to combat global warming whilst actively encouraging car use by building yet more roads! It's already been proven that building more roads only leads to increase car use and encourages further increases in traffic levels. What this country needs is investment in public transport and education aimed at informing people of the drastic consequences we and the planet face if we don't take urgent action on climate change.
