Students at the college, which has 282 GCSE pupils, smashed last year’s record with 47 per cent achieving five or more A*-C grades including English and maths, an improvement of nine per cent.

Some 54 per cent of pupils achieved five or more A* to C grades, including English and maths and 73 per cent of pupils chalked up at least five qualifications at grade C or better.

More than 73 per cent of the boys at the Hazel Street school achieved five or more A* to C grades, with more than 53 per cent getting the five crucial grades including English and maths.

Delight spread across Macclesfield schools as pupils realised their hard work had been worthwhile as a host of students at all of the town's colleges scooped fantastic marks.

Youngsters are now busily preparing to take up their place at univeristies from Edinburgh to Oxford, and a range of courses and jobs to prepare them for a bright future.
