Teen who died crossing M60 is named

15/10/2007

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy who died while running across the M60 motorway at Ashton has been named by police.

Nathan Owen, of Lytton Road, Droylsden, died after being struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross the anticlockwise carriageway at about 7pm on Saturday.

Police were called to a report of a disturbance outside the Hollywood Bowl complex on Lord Sheldon Way, Ashton, at about 7pm. As officers approached the area, they saw four young people running away.

One male was detained nearby, however the other three males ran out of sight. The detained male was taken home to his parents.

It is believed that the three other males went across open land and on to the embankment of the M60 motorway. Witnesses have reported two males successfully crossed both carriageways, however Nathan was struck by a vehicle when attempting to cross the anticlockwise carriageway.

He suffered multiple injuries in the collision and died at the scene.

Nathan's uncle Carl Owen said: "This is a tragic loss of the beautiful son of Mark and Pamela and brother of James, who is 8-years-old.

"Nathan was a wonderfully bright and talented young boy who enjoyed life and was destined for great things.

"His cheeky smile and charming manner made him instantly likeable, he was a friend to everyone and everyone wanted to be his friend.

"Nathan was passionate about sport and was a gifted all rounder. He excelled at many sports, but especially football in which he had many trials for Manchester United, Leeds and Bury. Most of all though he enjoyed playing for his beloved Medlock Rangers.

"The whole family is devastated by his loss and will miss him dearly."

The incident has been referred to GMP's Internal Affairs Branch who have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to call the Road Policing Unit on 0161 856 8360.
