Sue Carr23/10/2007
FIREWORKS, dancing and a lantern parade will mark the start of Diwali in Tameside.
The event, a celebration of the Hindu festival of lights, starts at 6.15pm on Sunday (28 October) at Ashton Town Hall when Deputy Mayor, Councillor Stephen Smith, will switch on the Diwali lights.
A lantern parade will lead crowds to the Indian Community Centre on Union Road, Ashton, where there will be entertainment including traditional Indian and South Asian dancing, Dhol drumming, music, drama and a firework finale at 8.30pm.
Diwali is celebrated by the lighting of many small oil lamps which symbolises the victory of good over evil and the hope for humankind.
This is the third year Tameside has organised the event which is now one of the biggest in the region.
Adam Allen, head of sport and cultural services at Tameside Council, said: “This is going to be our biggest and brightest Diwali festival ever.
“We hope that everyone in Tameside will take the opportunity to get involved in the celebrations.
