A PROMISING disabled athlete who won an award for inspirational young people has died in a car crash in Denton.

Dominic Cheshire, of Kelboro Avenue, Audenshaw died after the car he was a passenger in overturned on Tuesday morning.

The 20 year old, who suffered from spina bifida, sustained serious injuries and later died in Tameside Hospital.

Sports-mad Dominic played wheelchair basketball for Oldham Owls, represented his county at wheelchair racing and hoped one day to represent his country.

In 2003 he was awarded the Princess Diana Memorial Award for inspirational young people after scooping more than 80 medals at various competitions.

Parents Paul and Yolanda, and brother Ryan, paid tribute to Dominic, a former pupil at Egerton Park Arts College, Denton.

"Dominic was a fun, caring young man who was always willing to please," they said. "He was a well-known local lad with lots of friends who was soon to become an uncle.

"Dominic had overcome many obstacles in his life and always came through a better person. He will be greatly missed by all who he had met on his short journey through life."

The crash took place at around 4am on Tuesday near to the Fletcher’s Arms pub on Stockport Road which was closed for around four hours.

A 21-year-old man from Ashton was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital with spinal injuries, but was in a stable condition as the Advertiser went to press.

A 15-year-old girl, also from Ashton, was taken to Tameside Hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Havin a hard time believing your gone Dom.. I know you won't read or hear this but I want you to know that I was proud to have known you. All the things life threw at you, you overcame them and bounced back - never heard you complain. My thoughts go to your family, they must be going through hell.. You'll never be forgotten and you'll always be missed. - You were one in a million!
