DJ and me forced to live in a tent

Sue Carr
31/10/2007

A HOMELESS man is living rough in a tent rather than be separated from his beloved dog.

Dave Singleton has been sleeping under canvas with DJ in Tameside for the past 10 months.

The 38 year old says landlords refuse to take people with pets – and he cannot bear to give up his best friend.

Dave’s grandmother left the English springer spaniel to him when she died last year – at the same time he became homeless.

He says he was forced to set up home in a tent by Ashton canal.

"It has been hard," he said.

"DJ is all I’ve got left of my grandmother’s and I don’t want to give him up. He’s my best mate, my baby and if it weren’t for him I would have given up a long time ago.

"I’ve lost so much in the past year and I don’t want to lose him – we’ve been through too much to give up now.

"I’ve been to all the right places but nowhere will take us together."

Dave, once a staff trainer for Littlewoods, has been mugged and has to regularly move his tent to avoid being attacked again.

He added: "I just want to get myself settled in somewhere to live so I can get back to work and start looking after us both.

"I’ve promised him we’ll have a new home by Christmas and I don’t want to let him down."

A spokesman for New Charter Housing said that under homeless legislation Dave was not a ‘priority need’.

He added: "We have referred him to suitable agencies but some don’t accept pets. We have discussed opportunities to rent privately with him and would be able to assist him with a deposit.

"Mr Singleton sent New Charter an incomplete application form for housing and has not responded to our messages."

What an unbelievable news item, an English man and a pure bread English Springer sleeping rough at this time of year and in this day and age, open your eyes people and take a look around you and what do you see in Tameside. We see asylum seekers, immigrants and more and more foreigners in our borough and this poor man having lost his gran is forced to live rough, this is typical the way a single man is treated in todays society, I have been fortunate during my life and always been in employment, but if I lost my job being a single male I would probably end up like David. My parents lived in Tameside all their lives until becoming fed up with the way our country had become and treated its citizens, enough was enough and are now living in Spain enjoying life.
