Cash boost for Carolyne

21/11/2007

CASH is pouring into the coffers as kind-hearted fund-raisers dig deep for brave Carolyne Underwood.

A year ago the 25 year old was fit and healthy and enjoying life to the full.

But now she is facing life in a wheelchair after a freak medical condition left her paralysed overnight. As she slept one night in January, a blood vessel burst in her spinal cord. The bleed cut the signals from her brain, instantly leaving her unable to walk.

Now, she has one hope. It is thought that stem cell treatment might regenerate the damaged nerves and help her reach her goal of walking again.

But she needs to raise £30,000 to fund the pioneering treatment which is only available privately in China or South America. Her story has captured national hearts as money rolls in from folk up and down the country. And the people of Tameside are generously putting their hands in their pockets too.

A recent fund-raising night at Hotel Smokies Park helped swell the current total to £6,000

Carolyne, of Hough Hill Road, Stalybridge said: "The response has been overwhelming. I’ve been so touched by the support so far.

"The story has had an impact because it’s so rare but could happen to anyone. There are even pensioners sending cheques, which is so generous of them. It’s given me such a boost. The treatment is now a realistic hope. I hope people are kind enough to keep on giving.

"The night at Smokies was a real success. I want to thank Buzz Hawkins and cheeky Billy Bradshaw, Kennedy Studios dance troupe, Paul O’Grady impersonator Alan Black, Elektra, Phil Bromley for organising it all. And everyone who came along."

The next fund-raiser takes place at Dukinfield Cricket Club on Saturday. Tickets have already sold out. Carolyne has now set up a website so people can donate cash securely online. Click on www.supportadream.co.uk for further details.

As one who suffers from MS and MND, I can't wait for stem cell technology to be advanced enough to work. Sadly as yet, it doesn't and the only people offering this service are nothing more than con artist's playing on peoples hopes. These scam artists offer nothing but debt and misery and should be stopped. There is massive research going on in the USA but so far, that sadly is as far as it has got. There is also limited research going on over here down in Cambridge. This is so evil to play with people emotions.
