Panto stars are switched on!

21/11/2007

THE lamps may not contain any hidden genies, but that didn’t stop the stars of Aladdin performing the Ashton Christmas lights switch-on.

Former 911 heart-throb Lee Brennan and ex-Emmerdale soap star Cleveland Campbell flicked the switch to kickstart the annual festive countdown.

Wrapped-up warm, record crowds braved the chilly weather to watch the pre-show entertainment.

Carrbrook Brass Band played a selection of traditional carols before primary school children sang Christmas classics.

Motown singer Darren Phillips and Meatloaf tribute Peter Young performed live outside the town hall before Ashton’s School of Dancing brought the stage to life with an array of slick routines.

It was then time for the stars of Aladdin, which begins its run at Tameside Hippodrome on 12 December, to perform the official switch-on.

Meanwhile, Hyde and Stalybridge were treated to performances by Hollingworth and Longdendale brass band and Stalybridge Old Band respectively.

Gorse Hall Kids Club in Stalybridge sang carols before theatre company The Fairly Famous Family presented a fun-filled show with juggling and unicycling.
