Two jailed for sexual abuse

22/11/2007

TWO men who sexually abused two boys in the 1980s have been jailed.

John Murray Ahern, aged 55, was found guilty of nine charges of indecent assault and one of attempted buggery and was jailed for seven years.

Peter David Ward, aged 59, was convicted of four charges of indecent assault and one count of attempted buggery and was jailed for five years following a trial at Manchester Crown Court Crown Square.

One of the victims, who is now 32, was abused by Ahern when he was aged between 10 and 14. Ahern then introduced him to Ward, who was living in Collyhurst at the time, and they both sexually assaulted the boy between 1987 and 1988.

After he complained to police, another man, aged 37, independently came forward to Greater Manchester Police claiming he had also been a victim of Ahern, who used to be a youth leader at a community centre in Tameside.

The victim was a member of a social networking website, in which he had been in touch with old friends from the youth group and he noticed Ahern had sent him an email in 2005, asking how he was. This brought back the memories of what Ahern had done to him between 1981 and 1982 and he called police.

Ahern, of Elmwood Avenue, Feltham, Middlesex, and Ward, of no fixed address, were charged with attempted buggery under old legislation, because their offences date back to the 1980s. The offence has been replaced by new legislation.

Speaking after the court case, Detective Constable Mark Watson said: "These men were a danger to young boys and have caused a great deal of psychological damage to their victims."

Another example of scumbag paedophiles living under our noses mixing with children without being detected until its too late. I urge all parents to carefully look into who is minding their children and to be alert and suspicious to over friendly strangers & acquaintences who are interested in your children. The warning signs are sometimes obviously there.
