‘I can learn a lot from my Denton visit

5/12/2007

HOME Secretary Jacqui Smith has praised residents in Tameside for working together to combat crime.

Ms Smith visited Haughton Green on Thursday to talk to police and members of the community about their efforts to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Led by MP Andrew Gwynne, she was also taken on a tour of the area to see the results first hand.

Following a survey of residents in 2002, more than £350,000 has been ploughed into Haughton Green to make it a safer place to live.

As well as better street lighting and CCTV, improvements have been made to the community centre, library, the shops on Tatton Road and Haughton Green Playing Fields.

Denton was the first area in the country to try dispersal orders in February 2004 and has a police officer dedicated to dealing with anti-social behaviour.

Police, housing groups, businesses, schools and residents working together has also led to a significant drop in crime.

Ms Smith claimed the visit had even given her a few new ideas.

"The borough council has been ready to work with the community, partners, with neighbourhood police, to actually focus on the things that matter for local people," she said.

"It’s really making a difference to the local community and there are things here that I can learn."

The Home Secretary was in Greater Manchester to deliver a keynote speech on gun crime following a major police crackdown.

More than 1,000 officers took part in raids in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham and London. Police made 118 arrests and seized 10 guns, gas canisters, air weapons, a stun gun and almost 1,300 imitation firearms.
