Fitting tribute to tragic teenager

5/12/2007

HUNDREDS turned out for a memorial football match in honour of teenager Nathan Owen.

The 16-year-old, who died while crossing the M60 last month, was a promising footballer who had trials for Manchester United.

Nathan, who lived on Lytton Road, Droylsden, played for Medlock Rangers, who play in the Reddish and District Football League. It was their league secretary, Richard Rawsthorne, who came up with the idea of staging a memorial match between the Rangers and the Reddish and District Select 11 under 16s.

"It was superb, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. About 600 people turned up and the ex-Manchester United player Ronnie Wallwork was there as well," said Richard. "As a league we care about our players and their families. I’m a parent myself and if anything like this ever happened to me I’d like it if someone did something like this."

He thanked Curzon Ashton for giving their ground free of charge as well as Paul Hett who donated trophies and various football clubs who donated prizes. The final score was 3-0 to Reddish.

Nathan’s parents Pamela and Mark said they were touched to see everybody turn out in respect of her son. "It was absolutely fabulous," said Pamela.

"I’d just like to say thank you to Richard, to Jed Chant, Curzon Ashton, Scott Taylor, the Medlock players and the guest players, Steve Brannigan and Andy Lomax and everybody for coming."
