Burglary leads to dog tragedy

12/12/2007

A COUPLE have been left devastated after their house was burgled — which led to their dog being killed.

When raiders struck at the home of Claire Bradbury and Mark Mullen they escaped with jewellery, iPods, and a plasma television and presents wrapped up for Christmas.

But worse was to come.

The burglars had left the door open for pet dog Toby to escape out of the house on Buckingham Road, Droylsden, at around 6.30pm on Friday. He was the victim of hit-and-run incident.

Claire, 22, said: "We were out looking until about 1am and there was just no sign of him.

"We thought he might have been hiding somewhere because he was scared or that someone had taken him in.

"We put posters up, we phoned everywhere we could think of, then Manchester Dogs Home phoned us."

A council worker contacted the home after finding Toby by the roadside. It is thought the two-year-old collie died instantaneously after being hit by a car.

Mark, 24, added: "We just thought he was having the time of his life, out on his own for the first time. It’s one of the family we’ve lost, we would’ve swapped everything in the house for him."

The couple, both travel agents, are appealing for information about the thieves who were seen walking towards Edge Lane carrying the plasma television. The robbers are described as male, aged 14-15 and wearing dark clothing. Ring police on 872 5050 with any information.

I am a very close friend to Claire and Mark. It was so upsetting to find the terrible news that one they actually got burgled and two their gorgeous dog had been hit and left to die. It is a criminal offence doing a hit and run and the driver should be given the white feather. What a coward! I hope you are reading this because as the saying goes 'what goes around comes around!'

How terrible, my thoughts to the couple. As a dog owner myself I can only wonder at the horror they must be going through. Bad enough to be burgled, but for your beloved pet (a member of the family) to be killed as a direct result horrendous. To the heartless thugs that have made a few bob from other people's hard work - just remember Karma WILL come back and bite you!
