Councillor meets with Tory leader

THE future of the NHS was the main topic of discussion when Tameside’s Conservative leader met David Cameron.

Mr Cameron was visiting Trafford General Hospital to discuss Tory policies on the NHS, one of which was a pledge to end mixed-sex wards in hospitals.

He later met Tory representatives from across Greater Manchester, including Tameside Councillor John Bell and his party colleague, Ashton Hurst Councillor John Kelly.

When Trafford was known as Davyhulme Hospital, it was the first hospital visited by the then Labour health and housing minister and NHS founder Aneurin Bevan, on the day the NHS came into being — 5 July 1948.

Councillor Bell said he managed to have a five-minute chat with the Leader of the Opposition.

“We talked about the need for less bureaucracy in the health service so more can be spent on patient care.

“There needs to be less ticking of boxes on forms and more done for the patient.

“Patients seem to have to take a back seat, instead of letting the health professionals get on with the job.”

The Hyde Werneth councillor added: “Trafford Hospital is to lose its children’s services so there was a lot of local anger about that.

“Mr Cameron also asked about how many seats we will be fighting in Tameside at the local elections in May.”
