Woman, 88, robbed in own home
21/ 1/2008
POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an 88-year-old woman was robbed in her own home.
The woman returned to her flat in Trinity Street, Stalybridge, and noticed two people were holding a communal door open for her between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday.
One of them, a woman, held her by the hand and led her into the flat and told her to sit in the living room.
The woman then went into the pensioner's bedroom and threatened her before taking a purse from around the elderly woman's neck.
The robber is described as a white woman, around 18 years old, with dark hair and was wearing a multi-coloured jacket.
Sergeant Tina Bottomley, of Ashton Police Station, said: "The victim in this case has been left extremely upset and shaken.
"I would urge people in the local community to be vigilant both for themselves and for elderly residents. I also want to reassure them that we take reports of this kind extremely seriously.
"I would encourage people to alert the police to any suspicious callers you might have, even if nothing is stolen, as the information you can give us may be the key to catching these people."
Anyone with any information should call Tameside Police on 0161 872 5050 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
