Anger of residents in bins stand-off

Eve Dugdale

POLICE were called when residents barricaded a bin wagon in their street after refuse men refused to take their rubbish.

People living on Longfield Close, Hyde blocked off one end of the street with bin bags full of rubbish — and one neighbour blocked the other end off with his car.

After a tense stand-off in which residents and bin men exchanged insults, a council supervisor was called along with the police and the bin men stood down, agreeing to take the rubbish.

The clash was caused after residents missed their collection because a contractors van was blocking the street.

Tameside Council gave them extra bags and said they would be collected with their wheelie bins.

But on collection day, the bin men wouldn’t take the bags.

Resident Pauline Boswell said: "When the wagon arrived I asked the young lad about taking the bags and he said he’d have to ask his boss."

She was then told they were not taking the bags because two cars on the close were parked badly.

Mrs Boswell said: "I’ve lived here eight years and my neighbour 15 and we’ve never had a problem with the wagon before. The wagon had got past the cars so I don’t know what he was talking about."

She said that she tried to throw the bags in the truck herself before the wagon drove off.

She and son Warren took 10 bags to a neighbouring street and lined them across the road so the bin wagon couldn’t get out. Another neighbour blocked the other end of the road with his car.

She added: "I’ll be honest, I was angry and I was swearing but they were antagonising me. The supervisor said he was going to phone the police. When the policeman came out even he said they’re paid to collect the rubbish."

A stalemate has now been reached where residents take their bins to collection points at the end of the close on bin day to be emptied by the workers.

A council spokesman said: "A problem did occur on January 8 when residents of Longfield Close took issue with the refuse collections team. The police were called and the issue was resolved on the day.

"Vehicle access has always been a problem at this site but this was even more so over the festive period with residents’ cars making it impossible for the refuse vehicle to get in or out — an issue residents are well aware of."

It sems to me that this episode of unrest in the collection of rubbish in Tameside is one of the few that has been published .....I refer mainly to the 2 weekly Black Bin collections that have been foisted upon certain areas with no prior consultation whatsoever !!! We are told to take rubbish to the Bayley Street site if the Bins are overflowing before the colection is due ........ BUT .... i HAVE AN EVEN BETTER IDEA THAN THIS ........ EXCESS RUBBISH SHOULD BE DUMPED OUTSIDE ROY OLDHAMS HOME ..........let him see the real result that his Councils policies are having on this Borough !!!!!. I would not mind betting that HIS bin is emptied every week !!!!!! Prove me wrong Roy and put yourself on the 2 weekly round and see how your locality likes this !!!!! One point on this matter is .....as the council is only providing a "half service" on the Black Bins .... should we not then be able to pay half the Council Tax ????????

Plese could the advertiser make note that not all residents that live on longfield close are behind the recent incident with the binmen. Most people feel they do a brilliant job and they should be supported not abused. If people were to ensure they recycled effectivley their BIN may not be overflowing.
