School to get £20k ‘naughty room’

A SCHOOL is spending £20,000 to create a special area for ‘naughty kids’.

A mum of a pupil at Egerton Park Arts College contacted the Advertiser to express her fury after hearing the news.

The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, says pupils have been told the unit will be equipped with DVD players, TVs and computers for students who cannot take part in normal lessons because of their behaviour.

Egerton Park hit the headlines last year when it was placed in Special Measures by Ofsted and the entire board of governors were sacked. It is due to be replaced in the next few years.

The mum said: "The point is, it’s for kids who are being naughty, why should they get all these privileges? Kids that do really want to work get nothing.

"It’s the principle of things: if they’re bad they get treated like royalty. In my opinion they should bring corporal punishment and National Service back. "These kids are supposed to be in isolation. Therefore they should just give them the minimum comforts.

"They do drama at school and they’re doing a musical. My daughter has been told they need to raise £4,000 to stage it. They’re having to go to local businesses and do bag packings at supermarkets.

"My daughter’s getting to the point where she said, I might as well start being naughty."

Head teacher Mick Ironmonger has urged parents with any concerns to go directly to him.

He said: "We are planning to create an area where disaffected youngsters struggling in mainstream classes can be given extra support to motivate and help them so they do not end up being excluded from school.

"This will be funded by the LEA at a cost of £20,000.

"Originally we were planning to use two existing classrooms but have identified another area of the school.

"In terms of drama productions we always encourage fund-raising initiatives so that productions can make enough money to be cost effective."

What is the point in wasting the money on this anyway if it going to be demolished soon anyway?

I'm going to tell my kids to go and kick over a load of bins in Ashton town centre - they want a new Wii!!!

I am disgusted with this news. All my children have gone through Egerton Park, one of them is in their last year. I agree with the comments made on this story. Whats the world coming to. punishing the innocent and praising the bad, thats the way it seems. In the last 9 years I have been a parent at this school i have seen some changes and i can honestly say not for the better. The next thing we will see is a picture of the queue outside the room for students to get in, whatever next?
