Hospital wins new trust status

TAMESIDE Hospital is celebrating after being told it has won its bid for foundation status. Freed from central government control, the trust will now have greater independence and freedom in managing its affairs and budget, although it is still part of the NHS.

It also means patients and other residents of the borough can be more involved. They can become members or seek election onto a board of governors.

The hospital’s official name is now Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

A council of members, made up of local people, staff and representatives from partner organisations, was formed several months ago and will have its first formal meeting on 14 February.

Eight thousand people have already signed up to be foundation trust members.

Chief executive Christine Green said: “This is an important day for the hospital. Achieving foundation trust status recognises the significant progress the hospital has made. It is also a strong endorsement of our future plans. In particular, it will enable us to build on our commitment to being the hospital of choice for local people.”

The hospital is still subject to NHS standards and inspections. But it can keep profits from the sale of land and assets and borrow money privately.

To achieve foundation trust status, the hospital had to demonstrate that it was performing well and has robust plans for future development.

In March last year hospital bosses had deferred the application while the trust was investigated following concerns about treatment of elderly patients.
