Big reward to catch armed robbers
Emilene Coventry1/ 2/2008
A £25,000 REWARD is on offer after an armed raid on an Ashton bank.
Three masked men forced their way inside the branch of Lloyds TSB on Old Street, brandishing a gun at terrified staff.
They helped themselves to ‘a substantial amount of cash’ then fled in a stolen black Audi, which was waiting outside with a fourth gang member.
Police were called at about 5.30pm on Friday 25 January.
The torched car was later found on Kepple Street, Ashton.
The staff in the bank were said to have been left terrified and badly shaken up by the ordeal.
The British Bankers’ Association has now said it will give up to £25,000 to anyone who can provide information lead to the arrest and conviction of the offenders.
Detective Sergeant Tony Platten, from Tameside CID, said: “Although no-one was injured, the level of violence used by the offenders to secure entry to the bank, the use of firearms and the despicable level of threats directed towards staff made this a horrific experience.
“Miraculously, no-one was physically injured in this attack. However, the fact the attackers were armed shows they were prepared to use extreme levels of force if necessary and it is vital we apprehend them.
“The British Bankers’ Association is supporting the efforts of our officers and the public to apprehend these offenders by offering a very substantial reward. I would appeal to anyone who may know the identity of all or any of these offenders to contact the police.
"This time, no-one was badly injured but these people must be stopped to ensure that they do not continue their criminal ways and are brought to justice.”
The offenders were dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas.
Anyone with information should call Tameside CID on 856 9256 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
