New bid to ease hospital traffic
Emilene Coventry13/ 2/2008
COUNCIL chiefs have banned parking on roads near Tameside Hospital in a bid to ease traffic problems.
Residents say since work started on the trust’s three-year building project, visitors and workmen have been leaving cars inconsiderately and even dangerously parked on nearby Darnton Road, Mellor Road and Deramore Close.
But from today (Thursday) there will be no waiting at any time on Mellor Road or Deramore Close or on Darnton Road between its junctions with Mossley Road and Mellor Road.
The order is to be for an experimental period of "up to 18 months".
Ron Carroll, 68, lives on Deramore Close. He said the news was "magic".
"We’ll finally have our bins collected!" he said.
Householders on the little close had to wait three weeks for their rubbish to be collected because the road was crammed so full of cars bin wagons could not get down it.
Ron added: "It’s not just the bins, there’s also the fire engines and ambulances. What if there was a fire and the engine couldn’t get in to put it out?"
Farhat Saleem, 29, lives on Darnton Road and works at the hospital. She and husband Jawad, also 29, have had drivers parking so close to the entrance of their drive she feared she would damage their cars.
"It has got noticeably worse since the construction started. But it’s just during the working day and once the construction has finished it’ll be fine," said Jawad. "Double yellow lines could be a problem if we and other people on the street have visitors."
The hospital is being completely modernised with state-of-the art wards and equipment after a £112m investment was approved.
The main car park inside the hospital grounds has been closed but a new 400-space multistorey car park is now open.
A hospital spokesman said: "The car park is now open and once more people are aware that they can use it, the less parking problems there should be off-site. We’re promoting the use of the new car park via various means, including advertising in the local press and leaflets given out to patients."
A spokeswoman for Tameside Council said: "We’re putting in place an experimental traffic order introducing waiting restrictions, to promptly address many of the concerns raised by residents."
