Superstore traffic ‘danger’ to kids

COUNCIL leader Roy Oldham says a supermarket will be built in Hattersley, despite fears that the increase in traffic will result in someone being injured.

Residents raised their concerns about the land on Ashworth Lane at a meeting of Longdendale and Hattersley District Assembly on Thursday.

But although the proposals have yet to get official permission from council planners, Councillor Oldham told them ‘it is going there’.

The site, opposite land earmarked for a new library and community centre, is on an already busy road which is used by children from the two nearby primary schools.

Jane Whyte, who lives on the estate, said: "If they put a library and community centre there, there might be 100 more people a day using the road and that will be negligible. A supermarket, you are looking at 100 people in half-an-hour and the traffic will be astronomical.

"It’s an accident waiting to happen.

"It’s already the school run. There’s little kids going down there unattended and those children are then going to be subjected to that supermarket traffic.

"If I have to walk round every house on this estate and Broadbottom and Mottram and get a petition, I will do that rather than see these children hurt."

The mother-of-two urged planners not to put an entrance or exit on Ashworth Lane.

"I would like the entrance and exit on Mottram Road and Stockport Road instead instead of putting it on the estate where the children are" she added.

A council spokesman said a superstore was part of plans for the area.

"The superstore plan was also included in the proposals agreed with the council’s partners for regenerating Hattersley, for replacing the district centre. It is not unusual therefore for the council to promote the scheme and to have aspirations to secure a developer and retailer for its development as soon as possible.

"Although no planning application has yet been received, the council as a promoter of the regeneration of Hattersley supports its development."

Quote from M.E.N. "Homesearch" last June:- - - "A new district centre with big new supermarket is planned for a main road site just on the motorway roundabout opposite the busy McDonalds but that’s a long slog uphill if you are pushing a pram and will negate the chance of any smaller local shops surviving." (Endquote)

Yes there's too many cars on the road, but local authorities are so besotted with the big supermarkets that they don't give a damn about the traffic congestion caused by these developments. Look at Crown Point, Morrisson's have made this a congestion blackspot. God knows what Belle Vue will be like when the big new Tesco is built there. They're building a Lidl or Aldi (or whatever) in Hyde - like that junction isn't busy enough already! Look at the scandal of the over-sized Tesco in Stockport. Also, have you noticed how pedestrian-unfriendly these places are. If you're on foot, you have to negotiate a huge car park before you reach the shop's entrance. Look at Crown Point North or the Snipe. Would it really be that difficult to put the shops nearer the main road and the car park behind...?

Well it's like this, they build the supermarket, the traffic increases and accidents occur, so then they use this excuse to bring in congestion charges. And they think we're all thickoes, well Cllr Oldham, we've got your measure.
