Shock haul of young boozers

12/ 3/2008

POLICE seized a massive haul of alcohol in a recent crackdown on teenage binge drinking.

Officers scoured the streets of Tameside, taking booze off underage drinkers and issuing warning letters to their parents.

In just one week over the half term, they confiscated 90 cans, several boxes of lager, 17 three-litre bottles of super-strength cider as well as bottles of vodka and alcopops.

Based on local knowledge and tip-offs from residents, they targeted hotspots known for antisocial behaviour, such as Armadale Road, Dukinfield.

Sergeant Steve Lovatt headed the Home Office-funded operation. He said: "Most of them were aged between 14 and 16. They often get it bought by older members of the group but sometimes by their parents.

"It’s hard to pinpoint who’s responsible. The off-licences are wary about selling to kids, especially with the test purchases.

"We collect information about the youths drinking, then we refer them to the council's community safety team if we think there’s a problem. A letter is sent to the parents and if we think more than that is needed, we take them back ourselves. If the problem continues then we look at issuing acceptable behaviour contracts.

"These kids are putting themselves in real danger, drinking like this. It’s dark and many of them are far from home."

alcohol is too easily available. it should not be sold at corner shops and garages. put it back into the off licences where it can be more easily controlled. it is a dangerous drug after all. to a PM who is fond of sending messages i would ask what kind of message this report sends.

I would have thought that a firmer approach than this is needed !!!! ..... why not fine the parents of persistent offenders ????? as they are obviously not carrying out their full Parental responsibilites are they ?????
