SCHOOL ban: pupil Kyomi was sent home.
Tongue pierce teenager sent home from school
Emilene Coventry12/ 3/2008
A MUM says she is prepared to keep her daughter out of school for up to six weeks over a row about tongue piercing.
Kyomi Walsh, 15, was sent home by teachers at Hyde Technology College after she refused to take out a tongue stud she had done three days earlier.
Mum Carol Walsh says teachers never told her it was against the rules. And she is happy to keep Kyomi off school until the £30 piercing heals enough to be able to take it out without it closing – which takes six weeks.
The 32 year old, of Bushyfield Close, Hyde, said: "I can appreciate if it’s an ear or nose stud because people can pull it but her tongue piercing is in her mouth. If it’s visible then fair enough but it isn’t.
"What are they going to do next, shave their heads so they all look the same? It’s a school, not a prison."
Kyomi said: "There are loads of kids who have it done. That’s why I thought it was all right."
The college’s head teacher, Denise Spence, said: "We have a uniform policy that states no jewellery other than a watch.
"It was introduced in May 2003 and parents are regularly reminded. We haven’t excluded Kyomi, we’ve said she has to take the stud out and she has refused and gone home.
"We say to parents, if you want your children to have a piercing, have it done at the beginning of the school holidays.
"That way, they can take it out for school without it healing over."

Got an opinion you want to share?
Firstly, its nice to see comments from a younger person ... but ..... I have to say that I can remember what it was like to be a teenager, believe it or not !!! lol, but we too had to abide by rules, rules much harsher than the young people of today have to put up with. Imagine Julia if this young girl was allowed in school and suffered some form of injury due to this (it can easy happen in a PE lesson as I found when I had a severe injury to my mouth !!), I am sure that her Mother would be bleating and seeking some form of financial recompence from the School, so I am afraid that the argument for letting her back into School while the Stud is still in place is a complete non starter !!!
I suspect that point you make about the money being "none of my business", well as it probably has come from benefits, it is my business !!!
We adults may not always set a shining example to you younger people but please Julia if you are going to write comments please learn the correct art of spelling and pronunciation as you are not exactly setting a good example of the younger generation.
Regards
Dennis
