Bite worse than dog’s bark

AN MP was left nursing a broken finger after being savaged by a dog as he fed a pamphlet through a letterbox.

Andrew Gwynne was bitten as he posted leaflets for the forthcoming local elections in Audenshaw.

Poking his fingers through a particularly troublesome letterbox, he discovered just how vicious politics can be.

Lying silently in wait behind the front door, the mutt pounced and sank its teeth into his left index finger, leaving the politician yelping in agony.

It locked its jaws around his hand and refused to let go as he fought to free himself.

In a desperate attempt to distract the dog, Mr Gwynne bravely put his other hand through the letterbox, goading it into having a munch at that one instead.

He said: "The letterbox had a brush strip inside and we always push the leaflets all the way in. The dog didn’t even bark, it just pounced from nowhere.

"Its mouth clamped shut and then it began tugging. The pain was excruciating. I thought ‘I’m going to lose my finger here’. Luckily, adrenaline kicked in and I managed to prise its jaws open."

The MP for Denton was in Milton Avenue, Audenshaw helping canvas support for Labour hopeful Jean Brazil.

He added: "I managed to stem the bleeding with a tissue and rang my wife Alison. She arrived and rushed me to casualty.

"My finger had been well chewed as if I’d dunked it in a blender. An X-ray revealed a fragment of bone had snapped off which is now floating about inside."

The wound was dressed before Andrew was given a tetanus shot and discharged.

His mishap has caused merriment in the corridors of power with the news even reaching Number 10.

"I was summoned to Gordon Brown’s office to collect something. I unwrapped it to discover he’d sent a signed copy of his book ‘Courage’. Inside he had written ‘Hope you’re feeling better’.

"So at least my sacrifice has not gone unnoticed by the boss. At first, I thought it might be my P45!"
