Council defends parking charges

26/ 3/2008

COUNCIL leader Roy Oldham has reacted to anger over expensive pay-and-display car parks — by defending the prices.

An Advertiser probe revealed Tameside is the most expensive place to park in Greater Manchester, apart from the city centre.

The recent investigation discovered motorists fork out an average £2 for two hours parking — TWICE as much as shoppers in Rochdale and SEVEN times more than people in Bramhall.

Figures show motorists are turning their backs on council car parks after activity fell by 11 per cent last year.

Councillor Oldham said Tory calls for two hours free parking would mean Tameside Council losing £1m in car park fees.

He said: "Their statements regarding a free period of parking on municipal car parks has consequences they have not thought about. Maintenance and management costs of the car parks will be placed on all council taxpayers across the borough. There are those shopping outlets that do provide their own parking facilities, for example Hyde town centre’s multi-storey, yet according to the Tories, people are not shopping there as they should be.

"At the council tax setting meeting, the Tory group had the opportunity for moving and voting for their ideas yet not one Tory vote was cast for free car parking, more police on the streets or indeed for more facilities for the young, vulnerable and elderly."

He said he believed the re-opening of Ashton market hall later this year will serve as a shot in the arm to the town.

Roy,you spend our money on your plaque in Mottram, you spend more of our money on OTT street furniture and plants near your home, you spent our money on the burglar alarm installtion on your house, you get numerous extra perks from getting on a variety of quangoes and the Car Park at Hyde must rate as one of the most grotty in Greater Manchester with sludge, and mud,on a rough coated croft. No bloody wonder you hide away in your Ashton ivory tower,in between photo shoots by your favourite local paper. And whats all this on the TMBC questionaire letter you sent around 3 weeks ago wanting to know the full gross income of households at each address. Let`s have yours at Back Moor first, and stagger and amaze the Electorate.
