BIG salary: chief executive Janet Callender earns £155,000 per year with Tameside Councl
Union outrage at council boss wage

TOWN hall chief Janet Callender draws a salary of £155,000 a year — pocketing even more than a cabinet minister, it has emerged.
The figures obtained under the Freedom of Information act will come as a shock for Tameside Council employees still fighting for backdated equal pay.
Mrs Callender’s pay packet dwarfs that of cabinet ministers like Stalybridge and Hyde MP James Purnell who collects £137,579.
The ‘rich list’ published by the TaxPayers Alliance shows she is one of 88 chief executives across the country earning more than £150,000 a year.
The Alliance compared the salaries with the starting pay of a police officer on £20,000 and a soldier on £15,300.
Anne Keighley from Tameside Unison said: "We’re concerned that senior management pay claims have been sorted yet the equal pay issue still drags on.
"If someone feels the chief executive is worth that level of pay, then fair enough. But it’s concerning when some of our skilled and loyal members remain low paid and underpaid."
Annual accounts state there are 146 staff earning £50,000 or more at Tameside Council against 101 last year. The biggest rise is in the £50,000–£59,999 wage bracket.
Overall the wage bill, which includes councillors’ allowances, swelled from just over £198m in 2005/6 to nearly £206m in 2006/7.
A council spokesman said: "We are committed to delivering excellent services to the people of Tameside, but recognise that in order to do this we need to provide competitive salaries to attract and keep the best staff to ensure this continues.
"Our chief executive is part of a team responsible for managing a constantly-improving multi-million pound organisation.
"If you want the brightest and the best people you have to pay good salaries, anything else would be false economy for our borough. Our salaries certainly compare well with other councils."

She obviously cannot defend it !!!!! can she ?????
and as for the previous posters comments (If Only of Dukinfield), I can understand your thoughts but the public of Tameside DO deserve better than the present members of this Council as at present it is worse than the Mafia !!!!, corrupt, shifty and totally oblivious to the Electorates needs and wishes !!!!, think back a few centuries ....... and even Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask when robbing people !!!, but this crew dont !!!!!
