Blaze drama for residents

Sue Carr

RESIDENTS were trapped in their homes after yobs torched a bin outside.

The fire, on Friezland Close, Stalybridge, spread to the block of four flats, filling the stairwell with thick, black smoke and forcing the occupants to stay inside. They escaped when firefighters arrived at around 1.10am on Monday.

The bin was one of several set alight on the road at that time and firefighters are warning residents to be careful.

Steve Hoyles, crew commander at Stalybridge Fire Station, said: “We’ve had a spate of wheelie bin fires recently so we are asking people to be extra vigilant. If you are leaving your wheelie bins out, try to do it for as short a time as possible and store them away from the building.

“These people were safe because we arrived before the fire had gone through to the flats but they were trapped and it could’ve been more serious.”

The fire melted the door and window frames on the ground floor of the property and caused serious smoke damage to the stairwell. Anyone with information about how it started should call police on 0161 8725050.
