IT’S a trend that was started by fashionable young things in New York as a form of performance art.
But campaigner Rob Hardman wants to use a ‘flash mob’ to protest against plans to introduce congestion charging in Greater Manchester.
A flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief period of time, then quickly disperse.
Participants are usually tipped off by text message or internet posts.
But Mr Hardman, who runs the Tameside branch of Manchester Against Road Tolls, thinks it’s the ideal solution for protestors who don’t have the time or the inclination to go on an all-day protest march.
He said: "I got the idea from an article in the Manchester Evening News about a mass tooth brushing. A lot of people are working and don’t have time to go on a full protest, so I thought this was something they could do while they were out shopping."
Mr Hardman’s plan is to have a group of people assemble outside Ashton town hall on 26 April at 1pm.
At the sound of a whistle they will raise their car keys and jingle them for 15 seconds, he said.
"Anyone is invited to take part and if you don’t drive use your house keys – baby rattles, decorative bells, anything that will jingle," he added.
