In Bloom judges’ secret snoop

16/ 4/2008

TAMESIDE folk are urged to keep their lawns lovely and their streets spotless in readiness for a surprise visit by RHS Britain in Bloom judges.

The borough is hoping to scoop gold in the city category of this year’s contest.

Undercover RHS officials will swoop unannounced for the first stage of the judging process.

While the exact date is a secret, organisers know it could be at any time from now until 4 May.

A spokesman for Tameside’s Britain in Bloom bid said: "A lot of people assume In Bloom judging only takes place in the summer, but this obviously isn’t the case. The judges could have visited already or any day soon, making sure what we’re doing in Tameside takes place throughout the year not just for a few months over the summer."

The covert inspection will cover areas such as street cleanliness and overall tidiness, not just floral displays and hanging baskets.

He added: "I think there’s a popular misconception that In Bloom is all about flowers, spending loads of money and it’s only for those who like gardening – it’s not, it’s about so much more. Just keeping your garden tidy and litter-free and making sure you clean up after your dog will both help our cause, simple things like that. In Bloom is all about instilling civic pride in all the borough’s residents.  That means everyone can play their part in the up-and-coming campaign."

Roger Burnett, Chairman of the RHS judging panel, said: "We are looking at all aspects of how the community and their partner authorities maintain and care for the places they live in, not only florally but through sustainable planting and cleanliness initiatives."

The second stage of the campaign will be the summer judging tour in August, where the judges will be taken on an official tour by Tameside’s In Bloom organisers.

Winners will be announced at the RHS Britain in Bloom Awards Presentation on 24 September.

One thing that would brighten up areas of Tameside is that if Tenents of New Charter houses were made to keep their gardens clean and tidy as part of the agreement of their tenency .... after all a great proportion of these dwellings have larger garden areas than a lot of private houses but a lot of tenents seem to only want to grow weeds and have rubbish strewn all over them ....... HOW ABOUT IT NEW CHARTER ?????

I wonder just how much money this costs us, the local taxpayers ?????

We certainly will not win any prizes if the judges look around the New Charter Housing estates will we ?????
