Dad speaks out after brutal attack

18/ 4/2008

A FATHER has spoken out about a sickening attack on his family by a mob of drunken youths in the hope it will help police track down their assailants.

Alan Rodgers was repeatedly smashed over the head with a bottle and his wife Linda was dragged from her car by the hair and beaten. One of the thugs then stamped on her leg, snapping it in two.

Despite this, the brave mum managed to rescue her family – the couple’s two sons and a family friend were also attacked – by crawling back into the car and driving it home.

Their car was smashed up so badly by the gang it was later written off.

The incident happened after an earlier confrontation outside the Ying Wah chip shop on Old Road, Hyde.

Four or five men launched an attack on Alan’s son 16-year-old son and his 17-year-old friend – which they say was completely unprovoked.

Alan's son call his parents to pick them up.

In the car on the way home, they saw one of the men on Park Road.

Alan, 41, said: “I got out of the car and said to him, ‘Did you batter my lad?’. I didn’t go out there swinging, I just asked a question.

“He didn’t say anything, just launched into me. Then while I was fighting him off, between 12 and 15 others climbed over the railings and piled in.”

Linda, 43, said: “I remember someone jumping on my leg and it snapping and girls passing bottles to the people attacking us.”

Alan needed stitches for a wound in his head while Linda is now in plaster. Her son Joseph Heavyside, 18, suffered facial injuries.

Alan, of Rosemount Crescent, Hyde said he feared for his and his family’s lives.

“It briefly went through my head, just for a split second, this was how Gary Newlove died,” he said.

“If it hadn’t been for Linda I don’t know how it would’ve turned out.”

And he begged anyone with information to contact police.

“If these lads are left unchecked someone will end up dying,” he said.

Detective Constable Michael Robinson of Ashton CID said: “This was a violent and nasty assault on a number of innocent victims. The levels of violence directed at the family were extreme and unnecessary and the offenders must be caught.

“There was a large group of people that witnessed the assault, but not everyone in the group was involved in the violence. It is these people specifically that I want to trace.”

He added that any information would be treated in strict confidence.

Two teenagers aged 16 and 17 were released on bail after the incident on 4 April.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Ashton CID on 0161 856 9254 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
