Jaw shattered in vicious attack

POLICE are hunting a gang of men who launched a vicious attack on two pals in Stalybridge town centre.

The unprovoked assault left one of them with a broken jaw. The 20 year old had to have a metal plate inserted to keep his jaw together and was left in agony.

It was some time between 3am and 3.30am on Friday when the pair were assaulted. They were on Market Street, on their way to a taxi rank after a night out.

A group of up to seven men started shouting threats at them. Worried, they ignored the insults and hurried on.

But then two of the gang approached them and one launched an attack, first attempting to punch the victim’s friend and then striking the victim on the jaw, so his head ricocheted off some shutters and he fell to the floor.

Disorientated, he got to his feet but then another of the thugs continued to hit him.

Two men came to the aid of the pals but the attackers then turned their attentions to all four of them.

The victim was eventually able to escape in a taxi. He had to spend two nights in hospital, suffering multiple fractures to the left and right of his jaw, which is now held together with a metal plate.

Two of the offenders are described as white, aged 20–25 years, 5ft 10in tall and of average build.

Anyone with information on the assault is asked to call Tameside Police on 872 5050 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Should less emphasis be placed on the results of tests and more emphasis on general education for children?
