Teenager kidnapped and raped by thugs

28/ 5/2008

A TEENAGE girl was kidnapped and raped by two thugs in a car.

The 16-year-old was walking along Lees Road, Ashton, at about 11pm on Friday when two men in a dark-coloured car pulled up alongside her.

She was then dragged into the vehicle which drove to a car park at the side of shops on Broadoak Road where the rape took place in the car.

After the attack the victim was left distraught by her ordeal and officers are now asking women in the area to remain vigilant.

The police are appealing for witnesses and reminding women in the area to be alert if approached by unknown men in cars.

Detective Sergeant Tony Platten of Tameside CID said: "This was obviously a traumatising attack on a vulnerable girl walking home at night.

"This is an extremely unusual incident, however, as a precaution we are asking women in the area to be aware of what happened and to be alert at all times. I’d like to reassure the local community that we are doing all we can to trace the offender.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 856 9252 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Anyone who has been the victim of a rape or sexual assault can contact Greater Manchester Police’s Project Nightingale. Trained officers are available to provide professional advice and guidance on how an investigation may proceed and the support services that are available.

Project Nightingale can be contacted at St Mary’s Sexual Assault Centre on 276 6515.

Police have issued safety tips to women in Tameside: keep to well lit and busy areas, avoid shortcuts, stick with friends, plan how you will get home, be aware of your surroundings, make sure someone knows where you are and what time you are due home, carry a personal attack alarm.
