Firefighters attacked while tackling blaze

3/ 6/2008

FIREFIGHTERS were pelted with bricks while answering an emergency call.

The crew, from Stalybridge station, were called to Stamford Park in Ashton on Sunday night after a resident saw youths starting a fire.

As they tried to put the bonfire out, they were verbally abused and attacked with bricks and rocks.

No-one was injured but watch commander Dave Fisher has slammed the ‘mindless’ gang of around nine youths who were thought to be between 14 and 16 years old.

He said attacks like this happen ‘regularly’ across Greater Manchester.

“In problem areas we can request that another pump attends but then that means that pump is not available if there’s a more serious fire,” he said.

“We were asked to put the fire out, which we did and there was no need for trouble. We are just trying to do our job and I think it’s very sad that they should feel they need to throw bricks at us.”
