UPSET: Ashley Edwards and Jasmine Healey are not allowed to go to their final year prom at Two Trees High School in Denton

You can't go along to the prom, prom, prom ...

STUDENTS claim they have been banned from attending their end-of-year prom for staging a peaceful protest.

As reported in the Advertiser last month, youngsters at Two Trees School in Denton demonstrated about GCSE exam pressures.

Backed by parents, the group of final year students refused to go to lessons after being told they had to stay in school to revise.

Now they say it has led to a school prom ban.

Gaynor Edwards of Yew Street, Denton, said her daughter Ashley is ‘gutted’.

"I am utterly disgusted with the way that the whole situation has been handled. My initial complaint is the manner in which these young people were told, approximately five minutes before they entered an exam room. She couldn’t concentrate.

"These young people have been preparing for this prom since the start of year 11 and beyond, not to mention the amount of money parents and carers have had to save. I have spent in excess of £700 and being a single parent this has proven to be a struggle. I now have a ball gown and a limousine that are useless."

Elaine Healey claims her daughter, Jasmine, has not been allowed in school, even to pick up her revision books, since the demo on 15 May.

"They asked if I would home educate her and I said no.

"If they’d smashed windows or swore I’d say they deserved all they got, but they are just young people who felt they weren’t being listened to."

Parents are now trying to arrange their own prom and are appealing for help. Contact them on 07512 771803 or 07952 671473.

A spokesman for Two Trees said prom invitations were a reward to pupils who had worked hard and behaved well all year.

"Throughout the year students have been told that if they meet our clear criteria they will be rewarded with a place at the prom, but if they fail they would not be rewarded," he said.

"The students have been continually reminded of all this in assemblies, letters home and during form time.

"A small number have failed to meet the criteria and consequently they have not been invited to share in the reward offered to those who have met the criteria."

'The right to peaceful protest' A civil liberty as demonstrated by the education system. How does this make these young people unruly and unrepetent? If these young people are constantly brought down for having a voice, why teach them to have one in schools???
