Porky pooch is just a-Maising!
18/ 6/2008
A PORKY pooch has been slimming down in a bid to raise cash for the hospice that cared for her owner in his final days.
Black labrador Maisie was diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia when she was just a puppy.
But when vets told owner Lesley Higginson, of Huddersfield Road, Stalybridge that Maisie faced having a hip replacement operation unless she lost weight she decided to take action.
Family, friends and staff at St Ann’s Hospice sponsored the dog to slim and so far she has lost 10lb. The sponsored slim has already raised £175 for the Little Hulton hospice where Lesley’s husband Chris stayed. He died aged 34 after being diagnosed with a second brain tumour.
He was first diagnosed at the age of 23. A tumour was removed, but doctors could not get to the core of it and warned him it may come back. The couple got Maisie following Chris’ second diagnosis.
Lesley, 41, said: "It is still hard now, but Maisie helps me to get through it.I still find it hard that the hospice has to do all their fund-raising, it’s despicable that they don’t get any money from the government. They gave us a family room at the hospice and I spent the last three weeks with him."
Last month Lesley organised a charity fright night at Hyde Town Hall and raised £2,000.
