Arsonists destroy park favourite

ARSONISTS have destroyed a popular children’s train ride which has been entertaining youngsters in Stamford Park for more than 20 years.

The train, along with a bouncy castle, was stored inside a compound at the Stalybridge park. The damage was discovered when staff turned up for work early on Thursday morning.

Owner Kathryn Kilgallon said she was devastated by the attack but would not let the vandals win.

“This is a heartbreaking act of vandalism” she said.

“I’ve run the land train for 20 years and it has given hours of pleasure to the children in this community. I’ve seen children grow up and come back to bring their own children onto the train and it’s a great shame that this simple pleasure is being denied them.

“But I am determined that I will not be beaten by such mindless vandalism and that the train will soon be back in the park.”

Stalybridge Councillor Kevin Welsh also slammed those responsible.

He said: “This is a deplorable and mindless act and has ruined a facility that has brought pleasure to thousands of children and families over many years. I am sure that there must be people in our community who know, or have information about the people responsible for this crime and I would urge them to pass on any such information onto the police.”

The fire, discovered at around 7am, is thought to have been started overnight or in the early hours of the morning. Anyone with information is asked to police on 8725050 or Crimestoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555111.
