Shock £1.3m repair bill

THE cost of renovating closed-down Tameside Hippodrome is a staggering £1.3m, a report reveals.
The Theatre Arts Working Group commissioned detailed inspections of the Oldham Road, Ashton theatre and costings have now come back.
However, the report says a full mechanical and electrical survey has yet to be carried out which could mean more money needing to be spent on the building, which is more than 100 years old.
Hippodrome campaigner Norma Clough, 73, , who wrote to the Theatre Trust about her concerns for the theatre, fears the cost of repairs will mean the Hippodrome never reopens.
"They’re (the council) now going to say it costs too much to repair. You could see this coming," she said."They’d get a shock if the community now said they’d paid for it to be done.We could get everyone who signed the petition to pay a pound and raise money, but that would take a lot of organisation and the setting up of a committee."
The Working Group, which was set up to review and assess the future of all theatrical activity in the borough, not just to focus on the future of the Hippodrome, will meet again this month.
No comment was available from Tameside Council.
