Town hall strike blow
by Tom Rowley9/ 7/2008
COUNCIL workers are planning a two-day strike which will affect bin collections and many other vital services.
Tameside Council says it will strive to maintain key services for vulnerable members of the community next week, but warns that a full of range of services will not be available.
Unison, which represents cleaners, caretakers, librarians, dinner ladies, social workers, binmen and other public sector workers, wants the government to increase its offer of a rise of 2.4 per cent.
Anne Keighley, Tameside Unison secretary, says the nationwide strike on Wednesday and Thursday has been called to get the government back to the negotiating table.
"The employer has said it is not looking to go into further negotiations and are sticking at 2.4 per cent. At the moment, we feel our members are not able to keep up with the rising cost of living. There should be more negotiations about the current pay offer and we hope that the government and the employer will come back to the table to talk about an improved offer," she said.
She added: "Year-on-year we’ve taken low pay rise offers in the hope that the government will give consideration to us in future. But the government has made it clear that public sector pay is going to be held down without any further negotiations."With prices going up and up this offer will mean our members will be taking wage reductions. For them, and we have many who are single parents, this will mean considerable hardship and families won’t be able to afford to manage."
She confirmed that members will have to forgo two days pay and will be relying on the union’s hardship fund to support them.
Refuse collections on 23 and 24 July will pick up waste not collected next week.
Tameside Council is advising residents to log onto its website at www.tameside.gov.uk to keep up with the latest developments and call 342 2222 if they experience an emergency during the strike.
