Cats poisoned

A VET has issued a warning to pet owners after seeing four cats poisoned in one week.

Michael Gourley and staff at his Droylsden clinic fought to save the animals, but sadly three died after being brought in with breathing difficulties and paralysis.

The fourth is back at home with its owners and should recover. All came from the same area of Droylsden.

Mr Gourley said: "Anyone worried their pet may have eaten poison should take it for treatment straight away, and not wait until the symptoms become more serious."

And he urged anyone thinking of using poisoned bait to ensure it is placed inside a container only accessible to rodents.

Mum-of-three Angela Murphy, 35, of St Andrew’s Avenue, was one of the owners whose cat, Fergie, died.

She said: "It was terrible, she was suffering so much. The kids are so upset, they’re heartbroken. It sounds daft because she was a cat, but we feel like we’ve been robbed of her.If anyone is thinking of putting down rat or mouse poison, I’d say to them please can they make sure they follow the guidelines about where to put it and don’t put it anywhere a cat or a dog could go."

Mr Gourley added that he was at a loss to explain the source of the toxin.

"We’ve been in touch with the council to see if they’re using anything, but they’ve not been doing any treatment that would fit in with the clinical signs we’ve seen," he said. Thankfully, after we had the four cats last week there hasn’t been any since, so hopefully whatever it was is finished now."
