Mill made safe following wall collapse
21/ 7/2008
WORKMEN in a crane try to make a derelict mill safe after part of it collapsed, leaving a tower of bricks standing precariously alone.
Residents of nearby houses were moved to safety after the collapse at the multi-storey mill on Three Counties Road, in Mossley, Tameside.
No one was hurt, but police said building inspectors were assessing the structure.
A spokesman said it was likely that the building would have to be demolished.
A crane was brought in to hoist the workmen up in a cradle to the top of the building, where they removed bricks that were in danger of falling.
The entire front of the middle of the building fell away, and tons of masonry, wood and rubble collapsed.
Police cordoned off the area around the building to keep people away because of the danger of further collapse.
A police spokesman said: "The whole structure looked completely unstable.
"Workmen were at the scene for some time trying to make the building as safe as they could do."
