Blooming great – and flying the flag

OTHER boroughs will be green with envy after Tameside scooped a record-breaking 10 gongs for its open spaces.
Two more Green Flags from the Civic Trust nudged the total into double figures for the first time ever.
Victoria Park, Denton, Ryecroft Hall Audenshaw, Haughton Green Playing Fields, Hyde Park, Oxford Park, Cedar Park and Park Bridge, all Ashton, Werneth Low Country Park, Hyde, Lymefield and Broad Mills, Broadbottom and Denton cemetery make up this year’s winners.
The borough also secured an extra green pennant award to mark the quality of community maintained open spaces. And Victoria Park has also been recognised by the Trust, being awarded the Green Heritage Award for its outstanding contribution to the area.
In Tameside, the parks are managed by either the countryside service or district assemblies, while the cemetery is looked after by bereavement services.
Councillor Jim Fitzpatrick, DA’s chief, said: "Our continued Green Flag success proves Tameside’s green spaces are the equal of any in the country.
"It’s a ringing endorsement of all the work done by our staff who work tirelessly to ensure the borough’s green open spaces are always a pleasant and attractive place to visit."
