Golfers’ charity drive

FUND-RAISING sportsmen found a fairway to raise money by playing golf in four different countries in two days.
The four pals decided to raise money for When you Wish Upon a Star in memory of Hyde youngster Dominic Scanlon.
Paul and Simon Wrench, Mike Doyle and Ian Mackenzie left Werneth Low golf club at 5am, flew to Belfast and played 18 holes of golf at Knock Golf Club before flying back to Edinburgh and playing 18 holes of golf at Turnhouse Golf Club.
They stayed the night in Edinburgh before flying back to Manchester and driving to Wales, playing 18 holes of golf at Hawarden Golf Club and returning to Werneth Low Golf Club to play the final 18 holes.
Travelling more than 660 miles, walking in excess of 26 miles and completing the challenge in 38 hours and 50 minutes, they managed to raise more than £740.
"We were exhausted at the end!" said Ian."It was Paul’s idea. We go away playing golf every year so he came up with the idea to try something a bit different. Then we thought, if we’re going to go to all this trouble we’ll raise money for a worthwhile cause. I know Dominic’s dad, Steve, and I had the pleasure of meeting Dominic a few times so we decided to do it for Wish Upon a Star.We paid for all the travelling and expenses ourselves, so every penny we made went to charity. It was an experience and we would like to thank all the golf clubs involved for their hospitality and allowing us to play their courses and all the people who sponsored the event."
