Born lucky: Evie can count on it

EVIE Elizabeth Downey should be blessed with oodles of good fortune throughout her life.

For not only was she born at half past midnight on the 08.08.08 — which the Chinese reckon to be lucky — she also weighed in at 8lbs 8ozs!

Popular belief in China and several Asian countries has it that because pronunciation of the word eight sounds similar to the word prosperity, it is an exceptionally lucky number.

Mum Debbie Booth, of Manchester Road, Dane Bank, Denton said: "I started having contractions the day before. My sister Anita took me to Tameside Hospital and Evie arrived at 12.30am. She was actually 11 days overdue and was due on 27 July. Me and my partner Lee Downey aren’t really that superstitious but the fact that she was born on 08.08.08 and weighed 8lbs 8oz does make you think whether it all has a special meaning.  Everyone was saying how special the day was and for the Chinese it’s a very lucky birthday, what with all the eights.  We believe no other baby in Tameside — and possibly in the country — was born on the same day with that weight.  Maybe she will bring us some luck too!"

Debbie, 33, and Lee, 34, have been together 15 years and have two other daughters, Aimee, 10, and Grace, four. Debbie works on the perfume counter at Boots in Manchester while Lee is a project manager with a building services company.

Thousands of couples chose to marry last Friday in China and even the Communist authorities — Marxists are supposed to denounce superstition — chose to officially open the Olympic Games at eight minutes and eight seconds past eight, Beijing time.

Congratulations! One problem with the luck though: you won't be able to use Evie's birth stats to pick lottery numbers!
