Driver's illness caused crash: police

26/ 8/2008

A 55-YEAR-old man is believed to have taken ill at the wheel and crashed through a wall into a garden.

The accident took place at 12.35am on Bank Holiday Monday on Birch Lane, Dukinfield, near its junction with Dewsnap Lane.

Hyde fire service were called to the scene but the man had already been pulled out of his car when they arrived.

Ted Jones, 84, was asleep in bed when the car crashed through the wall in his front yard.

He said: “I didn’t hear anything, the first I heard was voices on the front so I opened my curtains and there was about five police cars, an ambulance and they were giving attention to a gentleman lay out on a stretcher.

“The police chap said he’d taken ill at the wheel,” he said.

Mr Jones said it’s not the first time there’s been an accident on his street.

He added: “It’s a very busy road. Unfortunately there’s been lots of accidents - the end house on here usually catches it and there’s a house further down Birch Lane which has been crashed into a few times.”

The man was taken to Tameside Hospital.
