Daughter’s special delivery for mum

WHEN Dr Ann Williamson hung up her stethoscope a couple of years ago, little did she realise she’d be called back into action – to deliver her own granddaughter.
The retired GP was fast asleep when she received a late night phone call from daughter Hilary Dwyer, 26, who had gone into labour.
Dr Williamson, 59, told Hilary to time her contractions before calling an ambulance. Unable to get back to sleep, Ann got dressed and decided to pop over to offer some comfort.
Dr Williamson, of Lees Road, said: "I only live five minutes away. Hilary was in labour with her first child Erin, five, for 12 hours so I told her to stay calm and wait an hour or so. I nipped up and brought Erin back to my house and put her to bed. But then I received a frantic phone call from Hilary shouting: ‘It’s coming!. I rushed back and sure enough she was giving birth. I couldn’t believe it. I’d not delivered a baby for more than 20 years and even then I was assisting a midwife.
I helped her on to the bed but realised the baby was in breech. Nature took its course though and minutes later she was born."
Tipping the scales at 5lb 3oz, Phoebe Louise arrived healthy and blissfully unaware of the fuss she caused.
Hilary, of Anthony Street, Mossley, said: "My husband Andrew, 28, was downstairs ringing for an ambulance. By the time the paramedics arrived it was all done and dusted. My mum arrived at the same time as Andrew’s mum Janice Payne. My waters had broken within minutes so I was surrounded by family. They were all fantastic. It’ll be nice to look back on really."
Dr Williamson, a GP at the Pennine medical centre in Mossley for 32 years, added: "Although I appeared quite calm at the time, afterwards I was shaking like a leaf. Of course, you have to be professional but it does make a difference when it’s your own daughter."
