Rowen Ratcliffe
Bright future for caring girl
28/ 8/2008
A BRIGHT teenager who divides her time between caring for disabled adults and teaching sailing is on her way to becoming a doctor.
Multi-talented Rowen Ratcliffe secured an impressive four A*, six A and two B grades in her GCSEs. But she barely had time for studying during a hectic year.
The teenager, a pupil at Mossley Hollins School, Tameside, is an assistant sailing instructor who helps train youngsters at a boating club at Dovestones reservoir in Saddleworth. Rowen, 16, whose GCSEs included health and social care and childcare, is also currently working as a part-time helper at a care home in Oldham.
She said: "I have always liked caring for people and I really enjoy science subjects, so being a doctor seemed like a good way to combine the two.
"I know that to be accepted to do medicine you need to have an understanding of patients. I did my work experience and a primary for disabled children and have been working at a care home since the summer.
"It can be challenging because you are helping people with different problems but it is also really enjoyable."
Rowen, who also had a number of duties as the school’s head girl and also plays the violin and clarinet, will go on to study four A levels at Greenhead College in Huddersfield.
She plans to go on to apply to a number of university to study medicine at university.
