Which box of delights would you be seen dead in?

BILL Shankly famously said that some people believe football is more important than life or death.

And one Hyde funeral director definitely agrees.

Frank Massey and Son on Mottram Road is offering football fanatics a chance to make a final gesture of support to their beloved team. They are selling a range of coffins in team colours, featuring club crests for such teams as United and City.

"We decided to do it because it’s something different, more modern," said funeral director Debbie Bambroffe."We do have a lot of people who wish to be buried in their football shirts."

And it’s not just football-themed coffins people can choose to be buried in.

The funeral firm is selling coffins for all kinds of enthusiasts: from guitar patterns, golf balls, a gardener’s shed (incorporating the words ‘Gone to seed’) or a draped Union Jack flag.

There are even wine bottles, a fur effect coffin and coffins covered in printed photographs of relatives. In fact, they say they can make a bespoke coffin to almost any design.

The coffins are made from either wood or carton board, a pulp containing 60 per cent recycled paper and wood pulp from sustainable forests.

Debbie, who is quick to add that the firm is still selling traditional coffins, says the family business since 1903 has almost come ‘full circle’.

"More and more people are going for the horse drawn hearse.  In the old days they had horse drawn hearses, and now we have motorised hearses but still people want to go back to the tradition of having a horse drawn carriage," she said.

Fellow funeral director Jane Thomasson added: "Music has become more and more important to people as well.  People are choosing more and more personal music to walk in and out of the crematoriums to. People can have whatever music they like — some have heavy metal."
